The River Oaks is a Houston hot spot. Besides being home to Houston’s top cosmetic dentistry practice, Uptown Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, the area has a lot of other interesting attractions: Here are 3 facts you may not have known about the River Oaks:
1. Rich History of River Oaks
The River Oaks area was designed with the highest standard of living in mind. In the 1920s, Michael Hogg, the son of former Texas Governor Jim Hogg, and attorney Hugh Potter purchased 200 acres of land surrounding the River Oaks Country Club. It was to be a well-integrated community that included a residential area, an elementary school, two shopping centers, and esplanades dressed with flowers. River Oaks quickly became the most expensive neighborhood in Houston and remains so to this day. In fact, it one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the nation with a median house price of just over $1,000,000.
2. River Oaks Reboot
The River Oaks District was a development project planned throughout the 2000s. In 2008, the financial crisis brought the project to a halt, but if you’ve been around the area, it’s no secret that the plans have moved ahead. The district officially opened earlier this year. There are still a few areas undergoing construction, but much of the planned 650,000 square foot project has been completed. High-end retail, restaurants, outdoor cafes, a movie theater, office and residential units can all be found at the River Oaks District. Akris, Brioni, and Chopard are a few of the retailers you can find in the area. These specialty stores focus on women’s wear, men’s suits, and watches respectively. Many of the retailers only have a handful of locations around the world making the River Oaks the go-to spot for exclusive apparel.
3. Good Company
If you believe in the saying “Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are,” then the River Oaks is the place for you. Good company can be found in residents of the River Oaks such as Tilman Fertitta and Clyde Drexler. Fertitta is the sole owner of Landry’s, Inc. that owns and operates over 500 restaurants, entertainment, and hospitality locations. In case you are wondering, that does include Landry’s Seafood. Most Houstonians are familiar with Drexler, who helped the Rockets win the NBA championship in 1995. Nicknamed “The Glide,” he was named as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history and is also known for winning an Olympic gold medal in 1992 as part of “The Dream Team.”
