At Uptown, Dr. Velasco is a big fan of porcelain veneers. They are a great cosmetic solution to issues with your teeth affecting their appearance. Your teeth could be stained from a reaction to tetracycline when you were a child. You could have a chip or a crack in one or two teeth. You may have gaps between some teeth. You may have teeth that have been worn down and are shorter than you’d like.
All of these cosmetic issues can be corrected with porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental porcelain that we create in our in-house lab to fit your teeth precisely. They are applied to the front surfaces of the tooth or teeth and they make the teeth look perfect.
Porcelain veneers are only a cosmetic solution – issues such as decay or gum disease would need to be addressed prior to your being able to have veneers applied – but they are a beautiful way to improve your smile.
But when we propose the possibility of porcelain veneers to some patients, they have some misconceptions about them. So, in this summery blog, let’s address four of these misconceptions about porcelain veneers.
- #1 Veneers are very noticeable on the teeth This is completely false. To make room for the veneers on the front surface of the tooth or teeth, Dr. Velasco shaves a small amount of the tooth enamel off. This makes room for the veneer to sit on the tooth without making the tooth larger. Plus, every veneer we place is made in our in-house lab to the exact size, shape, and measurements of your teeth.
- #2 Getting veneers is very painful We provide local numbing when Dr. Velasco shaves off the tiny amount of enamel from your teeth. This ensures you don’t feel anything. Attaching the veneers and living with them on your teeth are completely painless.
- #3 Veneers are easily stained The dental porcelain we use for our beautiful porcelain veneers is highly resistant to any staining. In fact, porcelain stains far less than natural tooth enamel. That means your porcelain veneers will remain bright and white for their lifespan.
- #4 Porcelain veneers are too expensive When considering having porcelain veneers placed on a tooth or multiple teeth, you need to remember that they will totally change the cosmetic flaws present on those teeth. An oddly shaped tooth or a tooth with a chip will now be perfectly shaped and bright white. When you consider that you can change your entire smile without the need for long-term treatments, such as orthodontics or a series of crowns and the like, veneers are really a great investment in you.
