Full Mouth Reconstruction

Full mouth reconstruction diagram

Believe it or not, millions of people are having problems with the majority of their teeth. Many are badly damaged and are causing pain. Full mouth reconstruction is the process of rebuilding or simultaneously restoring all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws.

The need for full mouth reconstruction may result from:

  • Teeth that have been or will be lost due to severe Gum Disease
  • Teeth that have been lost due to decay or trauma
  • Badly injured or fractured teeth
  • Teeth that become worn down as a result of long-term acid erosion or tooth grinding
  • Ongoing complaints of jaw, muscle and headache pain requiring changes to the bite

How does a full mouth reconstruction differ from a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is typically a cosmetic procedure to help a patient with smaller dental problems, while a full mouth restoration usually involves extractions and the need for custom fabricated new teeth. As dental materials evolve it is becoming hard to draw a line between purely “cosmetic” (such as elective) dentistry and “restorative” dentistry. If you need full mouth reconstruction, the materials available today make it possible for you to have functional and clinically sound treatments that also look natural, and in most cases here at Uptown are performed in just one day.

What is a full mouth reconstruction?

In short, it’s rebuilding and/or replacing all of the teeth in your mouth to restore your oral health and smile. A consultation with one of Houston’s premiere Prosthodontists like Dr. Roberto Velasco is necessary to create a customized treatment plan.

Does insurance cover full mouth reconstruction?

Depending on your specific dental insurance plan, you may be eligible for partial or complete coverage, and we are In-Network with most major PPO plans. There is no Medicare benefit for dental implant treatment. Some medical insurance plans are now beginning to cover procedures such as bone grafting, although filing these claims are up to the patient and can be complicated.

What is Full Mouth Reconstruction?

When all or most of your teeth are affected and need to be fixed or changed, we call this treatment a FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION. A full Mouth Reconstruction can be achieved through many different techniques or treatment modalities, be it implants,  or crowns,  or veneers, or combinations of the aforementioned.  It is considered the most complex and technique sensitive type of dental treatment and should always be planned and executed by a Prosthodontist, since that is what the specialty is based on.

What is the recovery period for full mouth reconstruction?

Depending on what modality of treatment Is chosen and executed the recovery times will vary.  Dental Implants tend to take longer since the healing period takes a while (usually 3 to  6 months depending on area of mouth and quality of bone) but other options may be very quick and the recovery times very short.

What are the benefits of full mouth reconstruction?

The benefits of full mouth reconstruction include a dramatic improvement in your oral health and self-esteem. The confidence that you gain through a brand new smile is really the best benefit of this treatment procedure.

Full Mouth Reconstruction does not imply surgery, the modality of dental implants implies surgery, but you can accomplish a full mouth reconstruction without any surgery.  Veneers tend to be purely cosmetic treatments, never done over implants and usually not in a full mouth reconstruction.
