Veneers, but not from Ikea
- Posted on: Nov 15 2019
Everyone loves to traipse around the Houston Ikea store, heading from fully laid out room to fully laid out room and ending with a plate of Swedish meatballs in the restaurant. Ikea is known for its affordable furniture and much of it relies on veneers. A dresser will have a thin veneer of a fine wood masking a lesser-looking wood that is making up the structure of the dresser. The veneers basically cover the wood beneath, presenting a more beautiful impression to anyone looking at the dresser.
What are veneers?
Like Ikea’s veneers on its furniture, our porcelain veneers are designed to cover imperfections on your teeth, things like cracks, chips, misaligned teeth, overly stained teeth, misshapen teeth, and the like. To have those issues fixed with either orthodontics or even implants could take years and be extremely expensive. But veneers present a perfect smile to the world by covering up those flaws with beautiful porcelain.
Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that are applied to the fronts of your teeth, they can cover one or the can cover them all. They even out the teeth, present a dazzling brightness, and mask imperfections.
How are they applied?
Before we place veneers, we usually want the teeth as close to their natural color as possible. So, if you like your daily latte or three, we may first want to whiten your teeth to remove stains on the enamel. Then Dr. Velasco uses a color chart to match the color of your veneers to the natural color of your adjacent teeth that won’t receive veneers.
All veneers are designed to do the same, cover the front of the tooth to change its appearance, and depending on the desired and needed changes the tooth will or will not be prepared. Digital or Analog Impressions, pictures and shades are taken so our in-house lab Uptown Dental Lab & Milling Center, creates your new beautiful veneers.
There is new technology in which we can fabricate and your veneers in advance. This allows us to do the complete procedure in one clinical appointment. This technology, called First Fit™, allows Dr. Velasco to predictably deliver your veneers the same day of your first clinical appointment. You can ask us if you are a candidate for this procedure.
When your veneers are finished Dr. Velasco checks the color match with your adjacent teeth and the fit of each veneer. Our Uptown Dental Lab & Milling Center has the ability to work with both full natural light and a custom shade room to ensure the color will be perfect. Once satisfied, he then permanently cements the veneers onto the fronts of your teeth. Now your smile is a beautiful thing for all to behold!
Porcelain is one of the materials that has had the most technological advancements in dentistry in the past few years. There are many varieties of porcelains, and each variety has different properties and different longevities. Some of the preferred and most widely used materials today are called Lithium Disilicate Ceramics, and they have amazing characteristics, which may ensure that your veneers can last a very long time.
