Missing Teeth: What are the Options for Replacement?

missingteeth

Every year, thousands of American adults suffer the loss of one or more teeth. This usually occurs when a mouth injury is sustained during an accident or when teeth must be extracted as a result of the presence of severe decay or disease. Regardless of how one loses their teeth, it usually affects their confidence as far as their appearance and dental health.

Problems Associated With Tooth Loss

Lost teeth can leave you unable to chew properly, which can cause severe jaw pain that compromises your nutritional intake. When even one tooth is lost, the remaining teeth may begin to shift completely out of alignment, causing far-reaching problems that may negatively affect your gums and jaw muscles. Additionally, because a single missing tooth can cause the loss of up to 25 percent of your jawbone structure, it can affect the appearance of the entire facial structure.

For these reasons, there’s no doubt that it’s important to have missing teeth replaced. Below, are the most common dental practices that are used to correct the big problem of missing teeth.

1. Bridges

Normally used to replace one or more teeth, a traditional bridge is constructed by placing crowns on both sides of the missing teeth. The prosthesis is then secured onto these crowns. A prosthesis is usually made out of porcelain or a similar material. Dental bridges can last up to 15 years with good dental care.

2. Dentures

This solution is most commonly used for those who have lost all of their teeth. Gum disease is usually the main culprit behind total teeth loss. Some dentures can be used on patients who still have some healthy teeth. These are known as partial dentures. While dentures can be an effective solution, they can also cause some complications such as jaw pain and increased chances of mouth infection. Dentures can last a minimum of 5-7 years. In some cases, they may last longer if good dental care is practiced.

3. Dental Implants

Most dental professionals strongly consider dental implants to be the best solution for replacing teeth in terms of both comfort and permanence. These implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. This procedure serves to form a strong foundation for your teeth in that it preserves a strong and healthy jawline. Dental implants are ultimately fused with the jawbone, which allows them to closely replicate the function and feel of natural teeth. Dental implants can last for a lifetime if properly cared for.>
