What to Expect at Your Dental Implant Consultation
- Posted on: Mar 15 2020
No one wants to have a missing tooth or two in their smile. But the fact is, 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. The best replacement option without a doubt is a dental implant. At Uptown Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry Dr. Velasco enjoys placing implants because they look and function just like a natural tooth.
But sometimes patients don’t fully understand what a dental implant is and wonder if an implant is right for them. At the time of consultation, all these concerns will be addressed.
In the meantime, here is some information on both of those questions.
What is a dental implant?
The implant is a screw-shaped fixture that is screwed down into the socket of the jawbone formerly occupied by the natural tooth. Once the implant is in the jawbone, the body will fully accept the titanium fixture and with time the jawbone grows around the implant. This process is called osseointegration. When the implant is fully anchored into the jaw, the next step in the process is to attach a post, also called the abutment, onto the implant base. The artificial tooth, is then attached to the abutment and the implant is then complete. Your new dental implant will feel and will function like a natural tooth, and with proper oral hygiene it can last you the rest of your life.
What happens during my consultation for a dental implant?
When you meet with Dr. Velasco, he will sit with you and go over what you wish to have done to complete your Uptown Smile and he will also advise you on what he recommends to achieve that smile. He will also go over your medical history with you to assure we do your treatment in the best way we know how, safely. Once Dr. Velasco is done with your assessment, one of our experienced treatment coordinators will then go over the duration of treatment and cost with you. Should you need financial assistance, we can go over our third-party lenders and choose which one is best for you.
During the consultation, we will also take a CT scan of your mouth to allow our team to diagnose your treatment properly and location of implant placement, if needed.
Next, Dr. Velasco will discuss the entire dental implant process with you in detail. He will go over these items:
- Steps in the implant process
- How long the treatment will take
- The number of appointments necessary
- Local anesthesia and sedation dentistry options
- Recovery periods
All through the consultation, you’re encouraged to ask any questions you may have. This should be a give and take of information between you and the team at Uptown Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, as the end goal is for you to be thoroughly knowledgeable and comfortable with the entire dental implant process and what all that it entails.
If you then decide you want to get an implant, we’ll give an exact estimate of the cost and we’ll schedule your first appointment to place the titanium implant base.
