All-on-4 Implants versus Dentures

At Uptown Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, we beg to differ. Dr. Velasco feels implant-supported dentures, specifically All-on-4 dental implants, are a far superior solution.

We’ve successfully used All-on-4 for dozens of our patients from across the Houston area, giving them back a great smile and the ability to eat just about any foods they want.

About dentures

A complete denture is a removable prothesis of a flesh-colored acrylic base and an entire arch of resin or porcelain teeth. The base of the denture sits on your gums and typically uses suction or some form of adhesive cream to remain in place. Dentures take a period of learning how to wear and talk with them in your mouth, plus they will slip at times. There are a number of foods you won’t be able to eat with dentures, as well.

Dentures also need to be refitted every year or two, as your jawbone doesn’t receive any stimulation from dentures, and it continues to degrade and lose bone mass. From there, you’ll need a full new set of dentures every 5 to 7 years.

Dentures need to be removed every night for cleaning and maintenance, and to allow your gums to rest.

About All-on-4

With All-on-4 dental implants, the goal is the same — to replace your entire upper and lower arches of missing teeth. But the approach is completely different. We place four dental implants on both your upper and lower arch. Typically, because patients have bone loss, the back two implants are placed at an angle, allowing the patient to avoid bone grafting.

These eight implants provide the crucial difference between dentures. We attach full arches of porcelain or zirconia artificial teeth to the implants. The implants fully anchor your artificial teeth, allowing you to eat steak, fruits and vegetables, chewy foods…basically anything you want with confidence and comfort.

You won’t have the sore gums that are par for the course with dentures. Your arches of artificial teeth won’t need to be refit. And your eight implants, with proper care and hygiene, can last for decades, even the remainder of your life.

Unlike dentures, you don’t remove your artificial teeth with All-on-4. You brush and floss just as you would with your natural teeth.

Finally, your jawbone loves the eight implants with All-on-4. That’s because when you bite and chew the enormous amount of bite force energy created travels down the implants into your jawbone (just as it does with your natural teeth), and this is how the jawbone receives the necessary energy to shed old bone cells and replace them with new bones cells to keep the jaw healthy and strong.

Bottom line? There’s really no comparison between dentures and All-on-4 dental implants. If you’re missing all or most of your teeth and want to get your smile and a full menu of foods back, give us a call at Uptown, (713) 766-1493, and set up a consultation with Dr. Velasco.
